The inaugural World Tennis Day, held on Monday 4 March 2013, has been nominated for a Sports Travel Magazine Award under the category of "Best New Sporting Event".

World Tennis Day was launched by the ITF and StarGames at the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final in Prague to help promote tennis participation around the world.

Two special events provided star power to proceedings as several of the game’s top names took part in BNP Paribas Showdown exhibitions in New York’s Madison Square Garden and at the AsiaWorld-Arena in Hong Kong.

The events featured current and former professionals together with demonstrations of the ITF’s Tennis10s programme aimed at increasing participation among young players around the world. Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka took part in the event in New York, with John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki taking part in Hong Kong.

Alongside these events, the ITF encouraged its member National Associations to support World Tennis Day with their own grassroots and club activities to attract new participants to the sport.

Events took place across 55 member National Assocaitions, from Australia, Fiji and Cambodia in Asia/Pacific, to Portugal, Norway and Great Britain in Europe, and then in Peru, Brazil and Argentina in the Americas.
